Preamble
It could well have been a safari in the Okavango Delta, or a visit to the polar bears in Svalbard. But, it became the ‘Ultimate Machu Picchu and Amazon adventure’, Lynne’s dream for years, with Peter markedly cooler on the idea. Not because of arduous trekking, or gaspingly high and oxygen-less passes – no, because of Peter’s height vertigo.
Tempted by the challenge though, Lynne and Peter joined up with our friend Vivien and booked the trip with our old trusted travel company, Active Adventures.
We had a jam-packed week in London before departing for Peru: hospital and physio appointments, travel clinic, sorting out our French bank account before its forced closure, our French tax return, shopping for the holiday, packing together with the pleasures of a long long walk, gym and yoga.
Best of all were the visits to the theatre, Kinky Boots and Copenhagen, at the Hampstead Theatre. Also, Lynne’s birthday treats, including a delicious cake baked by Kirsten, before a birthday dinner with her and Dylan.
No time to squander until we reached the lounge at Heathrow, having allowed plenty of travel time, on account of a very inconvenient tube strike.

After a two hour flight to Madrid, we had an 11 hour 45 minute overnight flight, of 9,524 km, to Lima, arriving at 5.15am, but of course just after midday in Madrid.
