Baffin Bay Crossing

We are sailing

We are sailing up the West Coast of Greenland rather than crossing Baffin Bay in a North-westerly direction to avoid a large amount of sea ice, which would slow us down. We have 1200km to travel which will take 2 days, scheduled to arrive in Pond Inlet at the north of Baffin Island on Saturday early morning. So we have 2 days amusing ourselves on board ship.

The sea is calm, with the odd iceberg. The day is passed with lectures, brisk walks on the outside deck, a visit to the gym and too much food: breakfast, warm cookies, lunch, apple strudel and dinner. We skipped breakfast but availed ourselves of pastries, fruit and an egg from the breakfast buffet to consume in the lounge on Deck 4.

Ice chart colour codes

Our expedition briefing showed us the most recent ice charts of the Northwest Passage, as we plot the way through. We will not be able to pass through any ice concentration colour coded above yellow.,

After dinner, some of the crew transformed themselves into the “ Seasick Band” to entertain the passengers; the dance floor moved to the rhythm of the music, the sea and the dancing of the passengers: really heartening.
